Many consider our rich indigenous heritage to be the heartbeat of Albuquerque. The Gathering of Nations celebrates the Indigenous influence that has shaped Albuquerque's identity for thousands of years.
Native American traditions, history, and arts are deeply woven into Albuquerque's cultural fabric.
Archaeological evidence shows human habitation in the Albuquerque area dating back as far as 12,000 years, with Paleo-Indian cultures leaving traces of their presence throughout the region. Long before European contact, this area was home to thriving Pueblo communities with sophisticated agricultural systems, artistic traditions, and complex social structures.
Did you know New Mexico is home to 23 Indian tribes, including 19 Pueblos, three Apache, and the Navajo Nation? Centuries of challenges have threatened Native beliefs and customs. Nevertheless, many of these beliefs and customs have lived on and organically blended with various cultural influences.
This resilience and cultural continuity are evident throughout Albuquerque, creating a rich multicultural environment that continues to evolve while honoring its roots. From the petroglyphs etched in stone on the West Mesa to the contemporary art, cuisine, and celebrations that make our city unique.
